There were two verses that really stood out this morning to me:
v.1 "Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those lead astray by drink cannot be wise."
Have you noticed that alcohol never leads to good? Nothing positive has ever come of it! I was reading a story last week that google was trying to help drunk people by adding "google goggles" to their email. This is a safety measure for people who get drunk. It makes sure that they do not send emails when drunk and say or send something that they would not send when they are sober. Alcohol makes you do things you would NOT NORMALLY DO! Where is the wisdom in that?!?
v.17 "Stolen bread tastes sweet, but it turns to gravel in the mouth."
Wow, what a thought. Gravel in your mouth. No matter what sin it is, eventually the fun and sweetness of it will turn sour and bitter. Hebrews 11:25 says that sin is pleasurable for a season...only for a while, but it will turn bitter. The analogy of the bread turning to gravel is incredible. I am not sure how gravel would taste, but I would not look forward to it!

It is not our place to "get even" for something that someone else has done. It is human nature to want to dispense some kind of justice when we or someone we love has been hurt but that is for God to judge and punish. Jesus was beaten and mocked. His cousin, John the Baptist, was beheaded. His family was forced to flee to Egypt when he was a baby. He was killed on the cross for something he didn't do. He had every excuse to seek revenge but He didn't. Remember that the next time someone does something hurtful.
God is directing our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way? God shows us what we need to see to follow Him and His will. I know I always want to know more. Why is God letting this thing happen? What is his purpose in that? What is the bigger picture here? I need to remember that God knows what is happening and the purpose that it serves. I simply need to make sure I seek His wisdom and follow His will for my life *today*.
I agree with you, Nik. Nothing GOOD ever comes from alcohol. I watched my grandfather drink himself to death when I was a teenager. He was such a great, fun man and I loved him so much...when he wasn't drunk. He died of liver failure. What a waste. I can remember as a little kid wondering why he was acting so embarrassing sometimes. He was always flirting with young girls (when he had been drunk) and it was so wierd. He never remembered any of it. How sad for my sweet grandma. She certainly remembered it. No, God never directly tells us don't ever drink, but...why even bother? What true GOOD comes from it? Nothing.
Inmy opinion this proverb talks alot about honor. It emphasizes honoring yourselves and others. This applies to so many verses in ch 20. The drink, to the king, to the uneven scales, it always rewards those with honor.

Verse 5 really stuck out to me. Somebody can have knoweledge, but not the wisdom to use it. We can know what to say to a person, but if we have understanding, and we know God, we can use that knoweledge to guide someone.
Yes, why should you start drinking if nothing good is going to come to it? It is sort of like saying, "I'm going to eat this light bulb. Even thought it has electrical wireing in it, I don't care! All of my friends are doing it, and even thought they had to go to the hospital, it's so cool!" You wouldn't eat a light bulb, so why would you get drunk or start to drink? And I know that it doesn't say "Do not drink" in the Bible, there sure are a lot of times that It says it is NOT wise to drink.
When I read this, I circled
v.3, "It is a man's honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel." "Honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions(Dictionary.com's definition)" So if you are avoiding getting into these little fights, then you have honor. "to disagree angrily; squabble; wrangle.(dictinar.com's definition)." But if someone, including myself, quarrels day and night for no reason, you are a FOOL!!!! There is no easy way to say it. You are a fool if you pick out a person's every word and fight about it. I am a fool if quarrel and fight with my friend or sibling for nothing but a dime! The dicitionary calls it a "squabble"! What a perfect way to define quarrel. GOD doesn't want us to quarrel.
